What are school governors?

All state schools have a Governing Board, which oversees their operation. Governors are all volunteers, who give up substantial amounts of time to support their schools. Governors are entitled to claim some expenses and time away from work if necessary to fulfil their roles, but they earn no salary.

There are four types of Governor:

Governor TypeHow they are Appointed
Parent

Parent Governors are parents of children currently at our schools. They are appointed through an election that all parents can vote in.

StaffStaff Governors are current members of staff at our schools. They are appointed through an election that all staff can vote in.
Local AuthorityThe Borough of Islington nominates a Governor to the Board of each school. The Governing Board must endorse the nomination.
Co-OptedThe Governing Board can appoint members of the wider community to be Co-Opted Governors.

All Governors generally serve a term of four years, before they need to be re-elected or re-appointed.
