Phonics is the study of the sounds in words and the ways in which they relate to letters in English. Phonics is the foundation of being able to read and spell. Our Nursery children practice the prerequisite phonics skills in line with the Phase 1 Letters and Sounds document, developing listening and attention and sound discrimination. In Reception and Year 1 we teach phonics using the Read-Write-Inc. programme.
Pupils take a national phonics screening check at the end of Year 1. Those who pass progress onto our Book Club reading programme. Some pupils continue with phonics in Year 2 to embed their knowledge and start Book Club as soon as they are ready.
