Resilience and The Drayton Park Way

Our Drayton Park Way theme this half term is resilience. We will be talking a lot to the children about positive attitudes to mistake making and things going wrong. We often refer to eggs and bouncy balls; when an egg is dropped it smashes, but a ball bounces back. We will be encouraging our children to manage their emotions well when things are difficult, to keep on trying and find constructive ways to resolve problems.

On Monday morning, in assembly we spoke about self-discipline and the importance of delaying gratification. These are big words and concepts, but we explored them through a scientific investigation into children’s ability to resist a marshmallow when offered one. I showed the children part of this ‘Ted’ video about it: https://www.ted.com/talks/joachim_de_posada_says_don_t_eat_the_marshmallow_yet?language=en. Please do follow up at home if you are interested.
